Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav recently issued a warning in the State Assembly regarding prevalent food safety related issues and announced a comprehensive overhaul of food safety regulations to combat rising cases of adulteration.
As per reports, the Minister revealed a troubling statistic of the 16,730 food samples tested between 2023 and early 2026, wherein over 1,400 were found to be unsafe or substandard. He specifically highlighted the dangerous use of synthetic colours in items like chilli chicken and jaggery, noting their links to severe health risks, including cancer.
To address the state's 'acute shortage' of infrastructure, the government is establishing five ultra-modern, NABL-accredited laboratories in Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Tirupati, Kurnool, and Tirumala. The Tirumala facility, costing ?25 crore, will feature advanced ‘E-Tongue’ and ‘E-Nose’ technology to ensure the purity of temple prasadam.
The reports added that the Minister criticised the current law's maximum six-month jail term as an insufficient deterrent, and confirmed that the state is consulting with the FSSAI to introduce much harsher penalties.
