Ajinomoto Co and Ajinomoto Fine-Techno Co acquire new plant site
Tuesday, 12 May, 2026, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Tokyo, Japan
Ajinomoto Co., Inc., has decided to acquire, through its consolidated subsidiary Ajinomoto Fine-Techno Co, Inc., a new plant site located within the Kani-Mitake Interchange Industrial Park in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture. At this site, AFT plans to construct a production facility for Ajinomoto Build-up FilmTM (ABFTM), an interlayer insulating material for semiconductor packages. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2028, with operations planned to begin in 2032.

The new plant will serve as AFT’s third production base, following its Head Office Plant (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture) and Gunma Plant (Showa Village, Gunma Prefecture), and will expand production capacity while strengthening a stable supply system from a business continuity planning (BCP) standpoint.

For more than 25 years since its launch in 1999, ABFTM has contributed to the increasing performance of semiconductors (central processing units and graphics processing units) used in electronic equipment such as personal computers and game consoles as the de facto standard interlayer insulating material for semiconductor packages. Going forward, demand related to information and communications technologies (ICT) applications, including data centres and networks for cloud services and artificial intelligence will become the background for continued high growth anticipated for semiconductors.

The new plant is intended to strengthen the supply system through expansion of ABFTM production capacity and to enhance BCP, with a view to growth in the semiconductor market from 2030 onward, and will contribute to supporting local communities, including through the creation of employment opportunities.

Key features of the new plant are as follows:
  1. A plant that supports business growth. Supply capacity to meet ABFTM demand from 2030 onward and the ability to accommodate future production capacity expansion. Location at a certain distance away from the Head Office Plant and the Gunma Plant, meeting various conditions from a BCP perspective to maintain stable supply
  2. Efficient processes through automation and digital transformation (DX). Promotion of DX through the introduction of automation technologies and ICT. Strengthening of supply chain management through appropriate inventory management
  3. A plant based on the Ajinomoto Group’s Purpose of contributing to the well-being of all human beings, our society and our planet with ‘AminoScience’. Providing an environment where employees can work proudly, safely, and comfortably. Promotion of Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Value (ASV) through the safe, secure, and stable supply of products, and contribution to society through business activities. Initiatives toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact, including the use of renewable energy.
