African Devpt Bank Group president Adesina bags 2017 World Food Prize

Akinyumi A Adesina, president, African Development Bank Group was the recipient of the 2017 World Food Prize. This was announced at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently. He will receive the $250,000 prize for his work in African agriculture and towards improving food security for millions in the continent.
In a letter addressed to Adesina following the announcement, M S Swaminathan, founder, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), and chair, World Food Prize Selection Committee, said, “No better choice could have been made for this award, which is now regarded as the Nobel Prize for food and agriculture.”
“Your contributions, both to Nigeria and to all other countries in Africa, in the areas of agricultural advancement, sustainable food and livelihood security, are truly monumental,” he added.
The World Food Prize, instituted by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Norman Borlaug, is the foremost award that aims to recognise monumental contribution towards the food security of the world. The award was instituted in the year 1986, and Swaminathan was the first World Food Prize Awardee in 1988.
