Action against non-conforming samples results in 1265 convictions, ?38.77cr penalties

Under the National Annual Surveillance Plan, the food regulator has conducted enforcement activities across the country and initiated action against the non-conforming samples, which include 1265 convictions and ?38.77cr as penalties during the last fiscal year.
As per the five year details of enforcement, FSSAI has recorded 1161 convictions with ?76.70cr as penalties during 2023-24 against 1188 convictions and ?35.98cr during 2022-23. Further during 2021-22 and 2020-21, the number of convictions was 671 and 506 against penalties of ?54.77cr and ?50.75cr respectively.

A prominent case related to red chilli was reported during 2024-25 wherein Patanjali red chilli powder was declared unsafe with pesticide residue levels exceeding the limits and based on testing findings, the authorities issued a recall order and the same product was withdrawn by the concerned company.
The Union Health Ministry, in a statement, has said that FSSAI has implemented Risk Based Inspections System [RBIS] to prioritise the inspections of the premises of the high risk Food Business Operators (FBOs) and the food authority has provided a platform on the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal, where on successful registration of a complaint by the consumer, State Food Safety Department/Regional offices depending on the jurisdiction take up the cases as per the provisions laid under the FSS Act, 2006.
Meanwhile, As per information available with the Health Ministry, so far, 305 Mobile Food Testing Labs have been procured & deployed by States against the funds provided by FSSAI for 541 MFTLs.
