Uncle's Kitchen, the popular Chinese restaurant in Orlem, Malad (West), is a quarter of a century old. And the now air-conditioned 150-seater is still a haunt for people who frequented it as collegians in 1987, when it was a small eatery with a seating capacity of about 20-25 at Mith Chowky.

It was founded by Jerome D'Souza, whose sons Steven (a.k.a. Sunny) and Ronnie now run the show. D'Souza Senior's brother Peter also joined the business. While Sunny takes care of the restaurant's takeaway and purchase requirements, Ronnie entertains guests and takes orders.

In the early days, the eatery's menu comprised just 12-15 dishes, including Chicken Chilli (minus the batter coating) and Chicken Lollypop. The brothers claim their father was the inventor of the former. It now boasts of about 250 items.

Incidentally, the restaurant is named after Gregory D'Souza, a social worker in Orlem, who was referred to as Uncle by everyone in the vicinity. He passed away in the mid-1980s, shortly before the restaurant was established.
