In a latest research report, TD the Market Publishers, found that India ranks 5th in the global citrus fruit annual output. Citrus fruits occupy 10% of the total area under all fruit crops in India and take the 3rd position after mango and banana in the production of fruits in India.
Citrus fruits are grown in an area of 810,000 hectare in the country with a production of 7503,000 tonnes and a productivity of 9.26 tonnes per hectare.
Currently, the country is slightly involved in foreign trade in fresh citrus fruit. Almost all the crop produced in the country is used for domestic consumption. India is an importer of citrus processed products.
“However, the Indian citrus processing industry has a huge potential for development. North-East India is the native place of many citrus species. It is of particular interest because of its high content of vitamin C and refreshing juice,” the research firm said.
In 2009 the trade balance for orange, grape fruit and lemon juice remained negative. India imports juice from Pakistan, Brazil, Germany, and Israel.
Of the various types of citrus fruits grown in India, orange (mandarin or santra), sweet orange (mosambi, malta or satgudi) and lime/lemon are of commercial importance. Lime or acid lime is also commercially known as “Pati lime” or “Kagzi lime.” Sweet orange is commercially important for production of palatable juice.
