ICMR & ICAR tie up to propose Rs 500 crore mega project on health foods

In order to tackle the problem of undernourishment, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have planned to take up a mega project worth Rs 500 crore on health foods as directed by the Planning Commission of India, recently.
This was revealed to FnB News by Dr Deepak Raj Rai, head, transfer of technology division, Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), in a chat over telephone.
“ICAR and ICMR together would submit a mega project of Rs 500 crore on health foods to the Planning Commission of India,” Rai said adding that the notable members from these two institutes had a meeting to finalise the mega project.
Rai then said that the meeting was held with an aim to get research proposals from different institutes across the country and that the focus of the meeting was on the development of process and technologies for production of health foods and formulated functional foods.
The meeting highlighted production of health foods from plant and animal source for targeted undernourished population, functional foods using bioactive ingredients, nutraceuticals-based health foods, clinical testing for the safety of developed health foods and formulation of defined regulatory framework for health foods in India.
Dr R.K Gupta, director, CIPHET; Dr S K Nanda, project coordinator (PHT); Dr S.N Jha, head, AS&EC Division; and Dr G S Tuteja, deputy director-general (DDG), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR); were present at the meeting.
“All the members were assigned to work on different health foods such as cereals, fruits and vegetables and meat products,” Rai said.
