GMF-Gouda (Netherlands) stood out prominently among the processing solutions companies that exhibited at the recently held Foodtec India 2009 in Mumbai. It is a world renowned company for drying and solidifying equipment such as Drum Dryers, Spiral Flash Dryers, Drum Flakers and Disc Pastillators. It is also known for its complete lines of potato flakes / potato granules.

Its Drum Dryers are used in the manufacture of cereal based baby foods (weaning foods), milk powder, drink cereals, brewers yeast, fruits and vegetables etc. Speaking to F & B News, Sander Schwartz, Area Sales Manager, GMF-Gouda Singapore Pvt. Ltd, said, "Drum drying is preferred to spray drying in the case of whole milk powder for use in the manufacture of cereal based baby food, high quality chocolates, gulab jamun and other Indian sweetmeats, due to the special taste imparted to the product by this process." They are also preferred due to their high thermal efficiency and effective applicator system that "kneads"viscous / pasty products. These dryers are precision engineered and designed to create a perfect heat exchange surface. They are of robust construction and work with minimal maintenance. Breakdowns are rare due to the superior quality and reliability. All critical parts are made of stainless steel to ensure optimal hygiene throughout the process. GMF machines operate to HACCP /EHEDGE standards. The company has so far supplied more than 4,000 Drum dryers across the world. With 100 years experience and over 20 Drum dryers produced every year, it is the market leader in providing drying solutions.

Established in 1909 in Gouda in The Netherlands, GMF-Gouda supplied its first Drum dryer in 1916. Since then, it has delivered more than 4,000 drum dryers worldwide. The dryers are offered in a wide range, from pilot models to 6-metre long giants. The company also undertakes turnkey baby food plants.

GMF peeling lines are used primarily for the industrial peeling of potatoes, vegetables and fruits. The equipment, however, is also highly suitable for shellfish, and for the sterilisation of herbs, spices and cocoa beans. The peeling equipment from GMF-Gouda, the Sepa-Stator steam peeler and the Brush-n-Belt dry peel remover, are characterised by high efficiencies and extremely short pay-back times. In most cases, the investment is recovered in full within one year. Furthermore, there is less peel waste, that means more end product per tonne input, a lower energy consumption and lower waste water costs. The machines can peel 50 tonnes of potatoes per minute, according to Schwartz.

GMF-Gouda is in India for over 20 years. But Nestle is their worldwide customer for baby food. And Nestle's drying machines may be already 40 years in India, says Schwartz. Besides Nestle, other prominent users of GMF-Gouda's machines in India are Heinz, Danone, Unilever, McCain, Indofood, Satnam Agri Products, Bharat Starch, Vegit, B G Chitale etc.

Schwartz says India is the next target after Russia, China and other Asian countries. The Singapore office takes care of the Asia region from India and beyond. China has a separate office. India is a potential market because of the growing economy, the growing demand for processed food, rising middle class, high salaries and the growing awareness about food supplements. About the response at Foodtec India 2009, he said their stall represented by Dynatech Marketing Company, was flooded with enquiries. The company is looking for franchisees and joint ventures for expansion of business.
