The Food Corporation of India (FCI), the central procurement agency, has decided to purchase over 10 lakh tonnes of wheat from 295 different centres in Rajasthan. RC Meena, general manager, FCI (Rajasthan), said that wheat buying would start from March 18 in the first phase and from April 1 in the second phase at the MSP (minimum support price) Rs 1,080 per quintal from farmers directly.

Meena said, "Two state procurement agencies, Rajfed and Tilam Sangh, have also been authorised to start the procurement as and when required. In the first phase, the procurement will start in Kota, Baran, Bundi districts, and in the rest of the state it will start with the arrival of the grain by April 1."

At present, the estimated wheat requirement of Rajasthan under the PDS (public distribution system) is about 1.15 lakh tonnes per month for BPL (below poverty level) families. According to the state official, FCI had to match the required quota by buying wheat from other states like Punjab and Haryana. As per the state agriculture department, the wheat production would touch a target of 63.81 lakh tonnes in the current rabi crop season. Other important rabi crops like mustard and cereals are expected to reach the market next month.
