International trade pressures have compelled traders to import such fruit as dragon fruit and Rambutan. This was stated by traders at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) market in Navi Mumbai.

Other imported fruit whose supply and consumption is on the rise of late include apples, watermelon, grapes, pears and plums. The United States, Thailand and the European Union (EU) are the leading exporters.

This trend may continue as international fruit supply is directed to India. Exporters from these countries are pushing their commodities by marketing them aggressively and reducing their prices. The traders also reported that low-priced foreign fruits were more popular in the APMC market.

Although fruit prices are now balanced by the demand and increasing consumption pattern, there may be price fluctuations in the future due to the increased supply.

“Fruit imports from Thailand increased in the last two months. Dragon fruit, Rambutan and watermelon from the country were among the highest sellers. Their popularity was attributable to the increased supply and low prices of these fruit,” said Shreekant Kotavale, fruit trader who owns Fresh at Home in the APMC market.

“The market seems to be doing well, with the increased supply of foreign fruit. Apples are among the highest-selling fruit, due to the increase in supply from America. The current market is pretty balanced due to good consumption with increased supply,” he added.

Mohan Kothavale, who owns Deepak Fruit Agency, said, “The APMC fruit market is in full swing with the increased supply of foreign commodities. Authorities informed us that there were international pressures by which supply got diverted to our markets.”

“Particularly, the import of fruit from the US and EU has increased. There is a high chance for price fluctuation and a higher supply of fruit into the market. Fruit, like apple, grapes, pears and plums are on the top of the consumption list,” he added.
