fiogf49gjkf0d Dr Mohan's Group of Institutions launched Jeevan Dharini, a brand of white rice and rice rava, to address a dietary challenge faced by most Indians, especially vegetarians – the food they consume does not contain enough fibre.
Dr V Mohan, director, Dr Mohan’s Group of Institutions, said, “Dr Mohan’s Jeevan Dharini Rice is an exceptional high-fibre rice variety and the first of its kind in the world. It was developed by employing intensive classical plant-breeding and bio-chemical screening approaches.”
“Dr Mohan’s Jeevan Dharini rice was selected for its high dietary fibre content (8.3 per cent) in its polished form, as compared to less than 1.5 % per cent in other cultivated rice varieties in the polished forms,” he said.
“This remarkable bio-chemical quality makes it suitable for consumption in a polished form on a daily basis, and is better for the overall metabolic health and for the prevention and management of lifestyle disorders such as diabetes and heart disease,” Mohan added.
R M Anjana, vice-president, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai, and joint managing director and consultant diabetologist, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, said, “The Jeevan Dharini rice possesses all the ideal cooking qualities such as non-stickiness and softness after cooking making it suitable for preparing rich and delicious recipes.”
“The grains have been tested in our state-of-the-art laboratories with stringent quality control protocols. Modern technology-based post-harvest handling and packing methods are adopted in our processing units to help maintain all quality parameters for a remarkably long period of time,” he said.
Ranjit Unnikrishnan, director, Dr Mohan’s Health Care Products Pvt Ltd, and vice-chairman and consultant diabetologist, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, enlisted the potential health benefits of Dr Mohan’s Jeevan Dharini white rice.
“It reduces increases in blood sugar and insulin demand; may decrease risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease; promotes gut health; relieves constipation, and prevents colon cancer,” he stated.
Indian diets are predominantly derived from grains such as white rice, which contains less than 1.5g% per cent of dietary fibre. It contains low amounts of fibre, and provides almost half of the daily calories in the urban population. Incorporating Dr Mohan's Jeevan Dharini white rice in the diet could help increase dietary fibre substantially.
Kamala Krishnaswamy, senior honorary advisor, Department of Foods Nutrition and Dietetics Research, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, said, “The new variety of high-fibre rice offers several metabolic benefits, and in the long run, would benefit the patients with obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, if consumed regularly.”
“Replacement of white rice with Dr Mohan’s Jeevan Dharini high-fibre rice as a staple could substantially increase the fibre content and the quality of the calories consumed. Dr Mohan’s Jeevan Dharini High-Fibre Rice and Dr Mohan’s Jeevan Dharini High-Fibre Rice Rava could be used for all rice-based preparations, including idli, dosa, upma, pongal and kitchidi,” she said.
