Sugar-free products have brought a palatable light this Diwali to the diabetics, given the skyrocketing demand of these products in the market. Arun Kumar, manager, Nathus Sweets, Bengali Market, Delhi, says, “Compared to last year, the percentage of customers asking for sugar-free dishes has increased up to 15%.”
A country-wide survey conducted by the Heal Foundation, Delhi, recently, revealed that on an average 20% of customers ask for sugar-free products. Of the long list of sugar-free products, sugar-free sweets are in great demand among the customers above 30 years of age during the festive season like Diwali. The survey was conducted in four cities - Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore.
Findings in the leading sweet shops of Delhi like Haldiram’s, Bengali Sweets and Nathus, reveal that trend of sugar-free sweets has increased with time as it shows a rise of 30% in sale in comparison to last year. Sugar-free sweets are also being prepared on orders in the city. The general age group of people asking for these sweets is mostly above 30 and about 25 to 30% people ask for sugar-free sweets on daily basis.
In Kolkata, the research was conducted at VIP Sweets, VIP Sweets Home and Shree Krishna Misthan Bhandar. It was observed that the trend of sugar-free sweets had increased with time as it showed a rise of 40% in sale as comparison to last year. The general age group of people asking for these sweets is 35+. Interestingly, about 30 to 35% people ask for sugar-free sweets on daily basis.
Similar findings were observed in Chennai and Bangalore.
Festive delicacies are generally very high in added sugar, cholesterol and trans-fat. These spell a disastrous combination for a diabetic person. Even small portion of sweets are sometimes very dangerous for a diabetic person.
"Diabetics can safely take sugar-free sweets available in the market in small quantities. They can also opt for other snacks like diabetic-friendly cookies," says Dr Y P Mujal, medical director, Center for Diabetes and Lifestyle Diseases.
Thus many companies are venturing into these products of late. Diabetic-friendly biscuits are available at any general store. These special ‘diabetic-friendly’ biscuits offer benefits that help manage diabetes better. They have zero added sugar, trans-fat and cholesterol and have high content of extra dietary fibres and complex carbohydrates. They not only give the satisfaction of eating sweet but also keep a complete check on health.
Britannia's NutriChoice Diabetic Friendly Essentials which are created from Oats and Ragi are known to manage extreme swings in blood glucose level.
Therefore, make sure that festive season is not tasteless for anyone or for you. Every time you feel you are devoid of relishing your sweets, bite into ‘diabetic-friendly’ biscuit, perfectly crafted for you and be a part of the celebration this festive season.
