fiogf49gjkf0d The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd (Campco) will launch Dairy Dream, a cocoa butter-based premium chocolate, on Wednesday. The product is the 25th chocolate offering by the Mangalore-based company, which will make its maiden foray into the premium segment.
Suresh Bhandary M, managing director, Campco, said, “For a long time, we have been marketing compound chocolate, which is manufactured using vegetable fat. But now, keeping with the trend which is driven by the need to avoid the use of artificial colours, we have moved into cocoa-butter based chocolate production. However, we have used vanilla flavour.”
“Campco is well entrenched in the chocolate space, and has been marketing its range in the B and C markets, which are largely Tier II and III cities and rural pockets. Despite adopting backward integration with its extensive cocoa cultivation strategry, the company does not intend to compete with global chocolate players, including Cadbury and Nestle,” he added.
Bhandary said, “The markets for chocolates in towns and villages have been driving the majority of our sales so far. But with the launch of Dairy Dream, we would now be expanding our distribution network to tap malls and large shopping venues in the A markets. This indicates a huge opportunity in this space.”
A 35g pack of Dairy Dream is priced at Rs 20. Campco, which produced 8,308 tonne products in 2011-12, and 8,960 tonne products the following year, set a production target of 300 tonne per annum for the brand. Besides the white chocolate brand Milk n Milk, Campco's managing director said the cooperative launched Snack Bar, a wafer-biscuit based version, in 2012.
The company‘s chocolate manufacturing unit is located at Kemminje, a village near Puttur, Dakshina Kannada. It stated that it was the largest factory in South-east Asia. It stepped into cocoa processing and chocolate manufacturing with a licensed capacity of 8,800 million tonne (MT). However, the installed capacity is around 13,000 MT. It has a cocoa bean-crushing capacity of 9,000 MT.
Campco has installed production equipment from leading global food machinery players for the processing of cocoa and chocolate manufacturing, including Carle and Montanari Spa, Italy; Aasted International APS, Denmark; Otto Hansel Gmbh, Germany; Sollich Gmbh and Co KG, Germany, and Sig Swiss Industrial Co, Switzerland.
