Bio-gen Extracts, which is known for its range of nutraceutical, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and therapeutic enzymes is now working to increase its market presence in the food ingredients space with its range of products.
With rising incidence of lifestyle disorders, the visible trends are the supplementation of nutraceuticals for conditions like diabetes, weight management, women’s health and malnutrition. Products like glucosamine salts, soy isoflavones and DHA are witnessing high demand.
Currently, the company has a strong presence in carotenoids. There is a huge demand for carotenoids from the food industry because of the growing interest by large food and beverage companies to fortify their existing range of products with such ingredients.
“We are a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Certified, fine chemicals company, which specialises in the process, development and manufacture of APIs, nutraceuticals, natural extracts, and enzyme and specialty polymers. The company has been focusing on creating intellectual property. In this area, we have been recognised by a leading government-funded laboratory for the development of a product, which is under technology transfer. We will not be able to share any further information on the same,” stated Saif M Mehkri, Director, Marketing, Bio-gen Extracts.
“We have 30 products in the food and pharmaceutical space. We are recognized for the EDMF in CTD format filed in several European countries for Ritodrine Hydrochloride. We have invested more than Rs 12 crore in infrastructure and capacity, which was raised through Makven Capital Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru to establish an EU-GMP production plant on a Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) allotted land at the Dobbespet Industrial Area. This is the company’s third facility and the largest plant. We will be inaugurating the plant this year,” he added.
“There is a huge potential for growth and we see promising prospects for the food ingredients and nutraceuticals segment going by our performance so far. There is also a considerable impetus from the functional foods space and we also see the extensive traction in the dietary supplements space, which is being driven by preventive and wellness awareness among the population,” Mekhri added.
“Fortification to boost promising prospects for the food ingredients and nutraceuticals. There is also a demand for these from the food industry because it is looking to fortify the range of products. In this regard, there is a significant requirement for our soy isoflavones, for which we are the largest supplier, in addition to the natural beta-carotene oil, lycopene and lutein in oil, powder and beadlet form. Besides there is also a significant growing interest for phytosterols and DHA (marine and algal). For all these products we have technical dossiers to support our domestic and international customers,” he said.
The company has also made available fenugreek fibre, which is recommended for diabetes control and weight management. There is scope for new concepts in functional foods and dietary supplements.
