The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has started procedure for admissions to some new generation courses offered by it. These include five-year integrated courses in MSc (Biotechnology), MSc (Climate Change Adaptation), four-year BSc Hons in Co-operation & Banking and a new PG Diploma in Solid Waste Management. These courses are not offered by any other university in the state, claims KAU.
The MSc Biotechnology (Integrated) course was started during 2009-10 with budgetary support from the Government of Kerala with the objective of improving the quality of biotechnology education in the state.
The duration of the course is 5 years. The course will be conducted in multi-institutional mode, involving institutions engaged in biotechnology teaching / research, to facilitate the utilisation of competent manpower and facilities. This course is offered at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram.
The MSc (Integrated) Climate Change Adaptation Programme was started in 2010 and is offered at the main campus, Thrissur. The programme is unique and provides ample opportunity for the students to understand the processes and activities that influence climate, analyse and interpret the risks and opportunities associated with climate change and make recommendations on future adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The programme provides for an integrated training to analyse climate change in the context of agricultural and environmental management. The interactions of the atmosphere with the other components of the earth system, the economic and policy issues associated with climate change, sustainability of agricultural productivity and food security are central concerns, in the response to climate variability and future climate change. This programme aims to provide human resources capable to deal with the above-mentioned concerns.
The eligibility criteria for the above two integrated MSc programmes are uniform. Students who have successfully completed the 10+2 level examinations, including CBSE and various other boards in India or equivalent with science subjects will be eligible for applying for admission to these courses. The student should have secured a minimum of 60 per cent marks, for general category, and 50 per cent marks for the SC / ST candidates or equivalent grades. Admission will be based on the performance in a common entrance examination conducted by the KAU.
