Bun World to modernise bakery unit
Saturday, 28 January, 2006, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
will invest Rs 8 lakh for a diesel oven baking unit and a dough kneader as part of its upgradation programme at its facility in the city. Currently, the bakery unit can take a load of 150 kg of dough in a day and with the modernisation it can increase capacity and expand its product range, Bhargavi Gopinath, proprietor, Bun World, told F&B News.

The bakery has over 70 products, which include 10 varieties of buns, brownies, puffs, sandwiches, pizzas, biscuits, bread, fresh cream cakes, pastries and other products.

The bakery has been exclusive suppliers to Deccan Aviation flights for the last two years but in the wake of a massive network expansion by the airline, Bun World gave up the catering just two weeks ago. It supplied sandwiches initially and replaced it with brownies, which became a major hit. Several passengers flocked its outlets in Bangalore to purchase brownies, stated Ms Gopinath. The initial supply order of 300 brownies a day went up to 900, she added.

In its early days, Pizza Hut outsourced Bun World products like apple pie and hot chocolate fudge cake which was discontinued after the former started its in-house production.

At the moment the clientele include information technology majors like Accenture, Aditi Technologies, Hewlett Packard to name a few for brownies, puffs and buns. The 10 year-old facility has its second unit also in Bangalore which was started five years ago. The company now intends to capitalise on the dual income of families which are strapped for time and prefer breads and buns for light snacks.

A visible trend is the demand for whole-wheat, multi grains like soya beans and high fibre content because of increased awareness on healthy foods.

Incidentally, Bun World brings out nine varieties of biscuits including whole-wheat composition which is low fat and high fibre bringing in significant sales.
