Maharashtra FDA seizes edible oil worth Rs. 1.94 cr in Beed

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized 1,19,187.5 kg of edible oil valued at Rs. 1.94 crore and suspended the licences of five establishments in Beed district for alleged violations of food safety and packaging requirements. The action was taken under the ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign, targeting oil repacking units and establishments dealing in loose edible oil.

The enforcement drive was conducted under the guidance and presence of Shrikant Karkale, joint commissioner (Food), Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra FDA, and Nitin Mohite, assistant commissioner, Maharashtra FDA. The action focused on preventing the sale and distribution of improperly labelled, inadequately stored and potentially sub-standard edible oil and ensuring compliance with food safety requirements.

Speaking about the enforcement action, Karkale said that the Maharashtra FDA had intensified inspections of edible oil establishments to protect consumers from products that do not meet prescribed safety, hygiene, labelling and documentation requirements. He said the department would continue such inspections and take regulatory action wherever violations affecting food safety and consumer interest are detected.

At Swagat Oil Industries, Plot No. 83, MIDC Beed, Maharashtra FDA officials on inspection found that soybean oil from a single tank was being packaged with misleading descriptions such as ‘Refined’ and ‘Ultra Refined’. The establishment was also found using reused tins on a large scale and operating in unhygienic conditions.

Officials reported the absence of an in-house laboratory, certificates of analysis (COA), food-grade certificates, medical and pest-control records and technical personnel. The FDA seized 66,652.6 kg of edible oil valued at Rs. 1,05,85,236 and collected 10 enforcement samples. The products included local brands such as Swagat Gold, Goodluck and Swastik Gold Ultra. The licence of the establishment was suspended with immediate effect and the unit was closed.

At Charkha Oil Mill, Plot No. 52, MIDC Beed, officials detected alleged misleading packaging of palmolein oil, use of reused tins and unhygienic conditions. The unit did not have an appropriate laboratory, COA, food-grade certificates and other required records. The Maharashtra FDA seized 45,995.7 kg of edible oil worth Rs. 78,22,050 and collected 11 enforcement samples. Products identified during the action included Shubham, Anuj Drops and Shubham Ultra. The licence was suspended and the unit was closed.

Action was taken against Jai Hanuman Traders, Vadwani, Beed, where officials found reused tins, unhygienic conditions, absence of laboratory facilities, COA, food-grade certificates, medical and pest-control records and improper tank labelling. The FDA seized 4,545.2 kg of edible oil valued at Rs. 7,24,596 and drew three enforcement samples. Soham Refined Soybean Oil was among the products identified. The establishment's licence was suspended with immediate effect and the unit was closed.

At Janhavi Commercials, Old Mondha, Majalgaon, Maharashtra FDA officials found unlabelled loose oil stored in an unsafe manner, without batch numbers and COA, along with unhygienic storage tanks. The department seized 1,746 kg of loose refined soybean oil valued at Rs. 2,79,360 and collected two enforcement samples. The licence was suspended and the establishment was closed.

A similar action was taken at Vinayak Oil Industries, Old Mondha, Majalgaon, where officials found unsafe storage of loose oil, use of reused tins and absence of required records. The Maharashtra FDA seized 248 kg of loose refined soybean oil worth Rs. 39,680 and collected one enforcement sample. The licence was suspended with immediate effect and the unit was closed.

The combined action resulted in the seizure of 1,19,187.5 kg of edible oil with a total declared value of Rs. 1,94,50,922. Enforcement samples collected from the establishments will be subjected to the prescribed testing process, while regulatory proceedings will be taken in accordance with applicable food safety provisions.

The Maharashtra FDA said the action is aimed at strengthening compliance across the edible oil supply chain, particularly in areas involving repacking, labelling, storage and sale of loose oil. The department has advised consumers to purchase edible oil only from licensed vendors and check the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence number, manufacturing and expiry dates and other mandatory labelling details before purchasing packaged products.

Karkale said the Maharashtra FDA's objective is to ensure that food businesses comply with prescribed standards from handling and storage through packaging and sale, adding that enforcement drives under the ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign will continue across the state to safeguard public health and consumer interests.
