Industry experts call for consumer transparency

As India moves closer to finalizing Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL), industry experts are calling for consumer transparency alongside practical implementation strategies.

The shift toward simplified labelling and colour-coded warning systems has emerged as a crucial step for the food safety ecosystem, though it presents distinct operational considerations for manufacturers.

?Highlighting the evolving expectations of buyers, Dhruv Tomar, founder of Paper Pro (M-Lense Research), emphasized that modern shoppers demand far more clarity regarding product contents.

?"Consumers today expect transparency, not just compliance. Measures such as simplified front-of-pack labelling, stronger monitoring, and evidence-based claims will strengthen confidence in India’s food ecosystem," said Tomar.

?Beyond physical packaging, Tomar pointed to the growing complexity of maintaining accurate nutritional details across digital sales channels. He noted that brands frequently update formulations, packaging, or nutritional values, making real-time synchronisation across online marketplaces a major operational burden.

?To address these hurdles, Tomar advocated for digital compliance tools and stronger collaboration between regulators, manufacturers, and e-commerce platforms to ensure consumers receive accurate product information at every touchpoint.

?While large food brands have begun reformulating products to meet global health standards, experts note that small and medium enterprises will require additional time, investment, and technical support.

A phased rollout supported by clear regulatory guidelines will be essential to foster consumer trust without compromising industry competitiveness.
