The government has achieved the target of forming 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) under the Central Sector Scheme for Formation and Promotion of 10,000 FPOs, strengthening collective farming, aggregation, value addition and market access for farmers.
Women’s participation has emerged as a key feature of the initiative. As many as 1,175 FPOs have been formed with 100 per cent women members, while women account for around 40 per cent of the total shareholders across all FPOs. The scheme also mandates that the Board of Directors or Governing Body of every FPO should include at least one woman member.
The FPOs operate across various stages of agricultural value chains and engage in activities including input supply, aggregation, procurement, value addition, and marketing of agricultural produce. Of the 10,000 FPOs, 9,865 have availed management cost support, 8,357 have received equity grants, and 3,140 have accessed credit guarantees under the scheme.
Under the initiative, each FPO receives professional handholding support for five years from the date of registration through designated Implementing Agencies. For FPOs showing low levels of activity, the Implementing Agencies, through Cluster-Based Business Organisations (CBBOs), provide additional support in areas such as capacity building, business facilitation, market linkages and operational improvement.
The FPOs have been established in different years since 2020-21 and are therefore at varying stages of development and business operations. Their turnover consequently differs based on the duration of operation and scale of activities.
According to government data, the cumulative turnover of FPOs formed under the Central Sector Scheme stood at Rs 20,358 crore as of July 31, 2026, highlighting the growing contribution of farmer collectives to agricultural marketing and value creation.
