The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to reoperationalise the regulations governing animal feed standards for milk producing animals under FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations 2020.
In a direction, the food regulator has stated that the finalisation of the regulations after receiving comments was yet to be done and alignment of the FSSAI requirements was needed for animal feed, therefore the regulations were being operationalised again.
The FSSAI direction reads, “The draft regulations were notified on 26.10.20 inviting comments from the stakeholders and are in the process of finalisation which is likely to take some time. Meanwhile, for alignment of FSSAI requirements with respect to animal feed with those specified in BIS (Bureau of India Standards) and DAHD (Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying) and to address the safety issue identified in the recent quality and safety survey of commodities like milk, it has been decided to reoperationlise these regulations.”
Under the amendment, the FSSAI intends to revise the note related to meat and meat products under Regulations 2.5.2 of the FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additive) Regulations 2011.
The proposed note under the amendment reads, “Milk and meat producing animals except poultry, pig, fish shall not be fed with feed containing meat or bone meal including internal organs, blood meal and tissues of bovine or porcine origin material except milk and milk products."
"And the commercial feed shall comply with the relevant BIS standards, as may be specified by the food authority from time to time and carry BIS certification mark on the label of the product”.
