The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken strict enforcement action against products from Nestle India and Everest Food Products Pvt Ltd. As per FSSAI, for Nestle, a prohibitory order on sale of ‘low fat dairy whitener’ was issued while Everest was asked to recall its ‘pre packed cumin powder’.
An official statement by the food regulator said that official testing declared items from both manufacturing giants non-compliant under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006.
The action against Nestle began when food safety inspectors collected regulatory samples of "Low Fat Dairy Whitener" from the premises of Bharat Hotels Ltd., operating as The Lalit, in Connaught Place, New Delhi.
Subsequent analysis by a designated Food Analyst revealed that the dairy whitener failed key quality compliance standards, leading the regulator to officially classify the sample as both substandard and unsafe.
In response to the laboratory findings, FSSAI issued a formal notice to Bharat Hotels, directing the establishment to immediately halt all sales and service of the affected dairy whitener batch. As mandated by the FSS Act, 2006, the Food Business Operator was provided a copy of the official analysis report and granted a statutory window to appeal the analyst's conclusions.
In another enforcement action, Everest Food Products Pvt Ltd faced severe regulatory intervention after a sample of its "Pre-packed Cumin Powder" was drawn from Riverside Resorts & Holiday Homes Pvt. Ltd. in Goa.
FSSAI said that initial testing revealed alarming levels of pesticide residues, specifically Azoxystrobin and Thiamethoxam, which exceeded prescribed maximum limits and rendered the sample unsafe for consumption.
Although Everest exercised its right to appeal the initial findings, a secondary evaluation by the Referral Food Laboratory confirmed the original lab results, validating the presence of excessive pesticides.
Consequently, FSSAI issued an immediate product recall order covering the entire implicated batch. Everest has been mandated to withdraw all remaining stock from retail channels, maintain strict tracking logs of returned products, and submit comprehensive corrective action reports to prevent future contamination.
