The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued immediate recall orders for two commercial food products after laboratory testing declared them ‘unsafe’ for human consumption under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006.

The regulatory action impacts Aquagri Processing Pvt Ltd for its food additive ‘Carrageenan’ and Nilgiri Oil & Allied Industries for its spice product ‘Shalimar’s Chef – Coriander Powder’.

As per FSSAI, both food business operators (FBOs) have been directed to withdraw the implicated batches from the market immediately in accordance with the FSS (Food Recall Procedure) Regulations, 2017.

According to statutory notices released by the apex regulator, a regulatory sample of Carrageenan was drawn from the premises of Aquagri Processing Pvt Ltd by officers of the FSSAI Southern Region Office.

FSSAI’s statement added that initial laboratory analysis revealed non-conformity regarding Cadmium levels, violating the limits.

Although the manufacturer exercised its statutory right to appeal, retesting conducted by a Referral Food Laboratory confirmed the initial findings, declaring the sample ‘unsafe’.

In a parallel action, regulatory samples of ‘Shalimar's Chef – Coriander Powder’ collected from Nilgiri Oil & Allied Industries failed quality benchmarks due to the presence of excessive pesticide residues.

The Food Authority stated that upon an appeal filed by the FBO, a second portion of the sample underwent testing at a referral laboratory, which corroborated the non-compliance and reaffirmed the product as ‘unsafe'.

The FSSAI noted that the manufacturing and distribution of both items directly contravene statutory provisions under the FSS Act, prompting mandatory recall procedures to ensure consumer safety across retail networks.
