Digital roadmap to track fish products soon

The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, has launched the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture aimed at establishing a comprehensive digital roadmap designed to track fish products from catch to consumer.
As per the Ministry, the national framework, introduced in 2025, has an end-to-end digital tracking system across the entire fisheries value chain and the government aims to strengthen consumer confidence at home and unlock high-value global markets to significantly expand seafood exports.
“The framework provides for a phased, inclusive, and technology-driven approach to ensure that both small-scale operators and large commercial enterprises can comply with traceability and certification requirements,” reads a statement issued by the Ministry tabled in the Parliament.
Elaborating further, the Ministry added that the framework leverages artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive analytics, risk-based verification, and quality monitoring. These tools will play a crucial role in safeguarding cold-chain integrity and validating catch certifications.
“It further provides for deployment of digital technologies such as Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Automatic Identification System (AIS), Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), QR codes, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and barcodes to enhance transparency, authenticity, and compliance with domestic and international standards. The Framework is aligned with internationally recognised food-traceability norms, thereby supporting regulatory compliance and strengthening market access for Indian seafood exports, “the statement further added.
Also, to avoid data silos, the national framework prioritises cross-system interoperability. Built on open standards, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and harmonised data structures, it seamlessly connects with existing national regulatory and registration databases of the entities including the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Export Inspection Council (EIC), Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA), and the ReALCraft vessel registration system.
In addition, the Department of Fisheries is facilitating implementation of the "Nabhmitra" application for digital documentation of fish catches in fishing voyages, capturing details such as vessel registration number, species, quantity, catch location, and vessel entry/exit information, thereby supporting traceability, transparency, and digital record-keeping in the fisheries sector.
“This integration aims to improve regulatory compliance, enhance market access, and strengthen the global competitiveness of Indian seafood exports,” concludes the statement of the Ministry.
