With an aim to introduce a centralised approach towards adulteration in food and drugs, the Delhi Government is mulling over merging departments of food safety and drug control.

On this issue, Satyendra Jain, health minister, Delhi, said that in Delhi adulteration was on rise, but mostly such cases remained unnoticed. Though people in general were ignorant about its ill-effects, fruits, vegetables, and milk were among those, which were most affected due to adulteration.

The minister added that the government had taken measures to completely stop adulteration in Delhi.

The minister was quoted as saying, “At present, food and drug adulteration are handled by different departments. We are going to merge them.”

According to government sources, the decision is aimed at checking adulteration in food and drugs, which has become a serious threat to public health.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Delhi Food Safety Department last year had constituted a Pesticides Residue Management Cell to check the menace of pesticide residue levels in fruits and vegetables. This was done after a hearing in Delhi High Court on the same issue which found a large number of samples having high level of pesticides’ residue.

Sources felt that merging of the two departments would result in increase in strength of officials and staff and they would be able to work in a more cohesive manner.

Meanwhile officials stated that the city government would take serious action against those who indulged in adulteration.

They added that there was shortage of specialised officers which resulted in loopholes and shortcomings in complete scanning of adulterated goods while the merger would help in regular and thorough checking of the shops doing business of food and drugs.
