Dr Kurien chosen for Agriculture Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr Varghese Kurien, father of the White Revolution in India and architect of Operation Flood, has been selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Awards Committee of the Agricultural Leadership Awards 2008. The award goes to outstanding personalities for having served the Indian agriculture system which has positively impacted the growth of India's farm sector, created newer opportunities and contributed to overall rural prosperity, according to a release issued by Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Ltd, Anand, the headquarters of Amul.
Dr Kurien receives the award for transforming and impacting the lives of millions of rural milk producers and helping India emerge as the largest milk producer in the world. The National Awards Committee is headed by Dr A R Kidwai, Governor of Haryana, and has 12 persons of national eminence as its members. The award has been instituted by Agriculture Today, the national agricultural magazine published by the Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development, New Delhi. The award ceremony would be held shortly in New Delhi as part of the Agriculture Leadership Summit under the chairmanship of Dr M S Swaminathan.
Dr Kurien is the recipient of several prestigious awards and honours including the Padma Vibhushan (1999), Padma Shri (1965), FAO's World Food Prize (equivalent to Nobel Prize 1989), Raman Magsaysay Award (1963), Wateler Peace Prize (1986), instituted by Dutch Carnegie Foundation named after J G D Wateler; Krishi Ratna Award 1986, International Person of the Year by the World Dairy Expo (1993), among hundreds of others. There is a museum at the Anand Dairy complex showcasing all the awards received by Dr Kurien.
