Wimpy -- the original burger since 1954 -- has opened its first outlet in Mumbai at the Churchgate station on December 31. The UK-based Wimpy came to Delhi in 1982, much before McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Subway and other MNC's specialising in fast food came to India. Inaugurated by the Western Railways General Manager, Wimpy is doing roaring business from Day One in Mumbai, though it has not been able to serve all the items listed in the menu. And for the first time, Wimpy is offering Indian food in Mumbai, including South Indian snacks, unlike in the North where it is serving only its original burgers, pizzas, pastas and continental food.
"The response has been very good," says R Sharma, Manager (Administration). "We have not been ready with the full menu as yet. Only 75% of the items are being served now, that too fall short most of the days because of the increasing demand. We'll be serving Delhi Chaat soon," Sharma added.
Prices are most economical and competitive, says Sharma. The burgers, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, range from Rs 30 to Rs 60. There are quite a few varieties to choose from. Pizzas are priced between Rs 75 and Rs 200 depending on the size and variety. A full meal of rice pulao with dal makhani, salad and papad costs just Rs 30. Other fast moving items are chole bature (Rs 35), masala dosa (Rs 22), idli, vada, upma (Rs 20 each) and Maharaja thali (Rs 75). There are three separate counters for Continental, Indian food and soft drinks in order to meet the demands of the travelling crowd.
Wimpy was started in the UK by Terry Barber in the year 1954 selling burgers and in 1982 it was brought to Delhi by Kanwaljit Singh Siddhu, who runs the Asia-Pacific operations of the restaurant chain. It has about 30 outlets in India, mainly in the North, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Panipet, Jaipur etc. Wimpy runs 4 restaurants in Chennai and two in Bangalore. The Asia-Pacific region has in all 45 outlets, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Middle East etc, according to Ashok Rai, Group general manager, based in Delhi.
Wimpy International has about 250 restaurants in the UK, US, South and East Africa, Dubai, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc.
In Maharashtra, Wimpy will open branches in Vashi (March), Lonavla and Thane (April), followed by restaurants in Goregaon and Bhandup, and later in Pune. The Lonavla and Bhandup restaurants will be on railway premises as in the case of Churchgate.
After settling down in Maharashtra, the company will move into further down south for expansion, says Sharma.
