The U.S. food waste management market is set for strong growth, projected to reach USD 30.01 billion by 2034, expanding at a CAGR of 5.40% from 2025 to 2034, according to a recent report by Polaris Market Research. The sector, currently valued at USD 17.76 billion (2024), is gaining traction as the U.S. steps up efforts to reduce the enormous amount of edible food wasted every year across households, restaurants, and food processing facilities.

With food waste being one of the country’s major environmental and economic challenges, the market is now pivoting toward sustainability and circular economy value chains. Advanced processes and technologies are being adopted to collect, recycle, and convert food waste into value-added resources, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and improving resource efficiency.

The food waste management process involves three key stages collection and transport, recycling and recovery, and landfill and disposal management. The first stage focuses on segregating food waste at the source and transporting it efficiently using smart logistics systems. The recycling and recovery phase employs technologies such as anaerobic digestion, composting, and fermentation to produce biogas, compost, and organic fertilizers, turning waste into valuable byproducts.

Despite increased recycling efforts, a considerable share of food waste still ends up in landfills. However, modern landfill facilities equipped with methane capture technologies are mitigating the environmental impact by converting emissions into usable energy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and several states are enforcing strict landfill diversion and recycling policies, including the EPA’s goal of cutting food loss and waste by 50% by 2030.

Key market drivers include rising environmental consciousness, corporate sustainability goals, and supportive government regulations such as landfill bans and tax incentives for composting. Emerging technologies, including AI-based waste sorting, IoT-enabled tracking, and blockchain systems, are revolutionizing food waste processing by enabling real-time monitoring and efficient recovery operations.

Among the emerging trends, the rise of biogas and energy recovery facilities, and the growth of food waste-to-animal feed and fertilizer initiatives, are significantly shaping the market. The integration of digital waste tracking systems across supply chains is further enabling companies to measure, report, and minimize waste more effectively.

Experts believe that the U.S. food waste management sector is moving from traditional disposal management to resource management, fostering a zero-waste, circular economy. With innovation, regulation, and sustainability converging, the market is set to play a crucial role in building a resilient food system that benefits the environment, economy, and society alike.
