Iraq
In Iraq, the Central Organisation for Standardisation and Quality Control (COSQC), in collaboration with Karwanchi Group held a symposium titled, ‘World Food Safety Day and its role in promoting food standards and specifications’, to mark World Food Safety Day 2025.

The symposium focused on the importance of food safety in protecting public health and enhancing the quality of food products, as well as the role of food standards in protecting consumer rights, promoting trust, and ensuring equity in access to safe, quality food, both in domestic markets and international trade.

The symposium concluded with a set of recommendations aimed at strengthening food safety in Iraq. These included: Launch nationwide educational campaigns to raise awareness about safe food practices, labelling, expiration dates, and storage; Integrate food safety education into school curricula and community outreach programmes; Encourage public-private partnerships to improve compliance and innovation in food safety practices; Promote the theme of “Science in Action” by investing in research, laboratory capacity, and data-driven policy development; Use evidence to guide food safety interventions and monitor their impact; Participate actively in international forums to harmonise standards and share best practices; Align national standards with Codex Alimentarius to facilitate international trade and protect consumer health.

The symposium showcased Iraq’s engagement with international organisations and intergovernmental bodies working in food safety and agricultural development, including the Arab Organisation for Agricultural Development (AOAD), the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
