FOOD PROCESSING

Monday, 05 December, 2011, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Anurag More, Mumbai
The Indian snacks market, which is worth US$3.5 billion, is one of the largest snacks markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with the organised segment taking half the market share and growing at around 20% per annum.

The unorganised snacks market is worth US$1.56 billion, with a growth rate of 7-8% per year. The market share of home-made snacks and grubs sold by local vendors is higher than the organised retail as these products are tailor-made to suit to the pocket of lower and lower middle income groups. However, increasing awareness on hygiene, food safety and increase in disposable income among lower and lower middle class population are the key factors fuelling the growth of organised retail in the snack food industry.

In India, the sweets market is split into two, hard-boiled sugar confectionery and chocolates. The size of the chocolate market is about 6.5 billion and is growing at roughly 11% year-on-year and the sugar confectionery market is around 20 billion of which the organised sector constitutes 12 billion. The growth rate is around 7% year-on-year.

There is a huge potential to develop the sweets and snacks market in India into a thriving industry. What is needed is a serious effort to develop the relevant technology to manufacture, package sweets and snacks on a larger scale and to develop good distribution solutions.

Sweet and SnackTec India 2011

Koelnmesse is organising the sixth edition of Sweet and SnackTec India 2011, during December 06-08, 2011, at Hall No. 6, Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon (E), Mumbai. This event will cover all aspects of the sweets, snacks and confectionery industry like processing technologies, packaging solutions, ingredients, distribution, refrigeration, and quality management.

Sweet and SnackTec India, formerly Sweet and Snack Factory India, had a complete makeover with stronger focus on sweets, confectionery and snacks processing industry. Organisers are expecting around 120 exhibitors from 120 countries and around 3,000-4,000 visitors at the show.

Market overview and product comparison are becoming increasingly costly in time and money. The same applies to personal communication between producer and major customer. The show is therefore conceived as an international platform for supplier and technology-seekers in the sweets and snacks industry. Its two basic principles are restriction of products to the relevant items, visitors restricted to technology providers.

Exhibitor Profile

The exhibitors’ profile includes raw materials & ingredients, processing machines & equipments, packaging technology and materials automation, data processing, open and closed loop control technology, refrigeration and air-conditioning technology, ventilation & heating technology, safety, quality management, operating hygiene, operating equipment and auxiliary device, waste disposal and recycling, service firms, and publishers.

Visitors

The visitors’ profile includes decision-makers from different product lines of sweets and snacks industry like confectionery, dragee, cocoa, almond and nut chocolate, bakery, biscuit, pastry, waffle, cereal, and allied products.

At the end, there will be open house discussion and closing. The event is an ideal platform for the industry to discuss the latest trends and challenges.

Ice cream (derived from earlier iced cream) is a frozen dessert usually made from dairy products such as milk and cream and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavours. Most varieties contain sugar, although some are made with other sweeteners. In some cases, artificial flavourings and colourings are used in addition to or instead of the natural ingredients.

The mixture of chosen ingredients is stirred slowly while cooling in order to incorporate air and to prevent large ice crystals from forming. The result is a smoothly textured semi-solid foam that is malleable and can be scooped – ice cream. India has the right climate for ice cream consumption but has a very low per capita consumption which is approximately 300 ml per annum as against the world average of 2.3 ltr per annum, which means a large untapped potential business awaits to be explored. Seeing this enormous business opportunity, the war has already begun to grab the most of this pie with national players increasing their production and international players trying to find a way to enter the Indian markets.

To be part of this race for increasing the market share, it's almost inevitable for ice cream manufacturers to optimise their production systems, packaging technologies being used, distribution channels and last but not the least, compliance with quality standards. The stalwarts of the ice cream industry will share their experiences and knowledge. All who are in the ice cream business or who intend to
