Virchow Biotech Ltd, a Virchow Group company, claims to be the first company to manufacture Sucralose in India. The company has formally launched the product recently at Hyderabad.
Sucralose, obtained through a multi-stage process from sugar, is tastier than other non-calorie sweeteners. As per an estimate, sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar.
Scientific studies have proven Sucralose to be safe, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. Sucralose has been granted approval by regulatory bodies including World Health Organisation, USFDA, National Food Autho-rity of Australia and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Government of India), M Narayana Reddy of the Virchow Group said.
Sucralose is not recognized as sugar or carbohydrate by the body and hence does not get metabolised. It adds no calories and thus suitable for control of obesity. Sucralose has been found to have no effect on glucose control and insulin secretion. Consequently, there is no increase in blood sugar levels, and is suitable for diabetics. It also does not promote the growth of oral bacteria and tooth decay can be avoided.
Narayana Reddy said Relish was stable and could withstand heating and long-term storage. It could therefore be used as one would use regular sugar-in baking, cooking, preparation of sweets, juices, milkshakes, beverages etc. The product is priced at Rs 99 for a 50 gm tin.
Dr Hemanth Nandigala, Executive Director, Virchow Biotech, told Food & Beverage News that the company is producing the product at its Jeedimetla unit in Hyderabad. The company will initially produce about two tonnes per month and it has an installed capacity to produce 10 tonnes per month.
Virchow would initially be manufacturing the product to meet domestic demand and later increase its capacity to target export markets, Dr Nandigala added.
The company also proposes to launch variants of sweetener in the next two years and by that time it hopes to establish the 'Relish' brand nationally. The diet sugar market in India is worth Rs 60 crore and is growing at a rate of 20-25 per cent.
Dr Nandigala opined though soon after the launch of 'Relish', many players will try to enter the market by producing similar products, Virchow will have its unique advantage of having process efficiencies which will help in sustaining the growth of the product.
