Savourites Group opens Grand Trunk Road
Saturday, 16 December, 2006, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
MV Chandrashekar, Bangalore
s Group has launched in Bangalore, its latest premium stand-alone restaurant, 'Grand Trunk Road.' Located centrally in the city, the restaurant offers diners cuisine from Kolkata to Kabul, passing through many legendary regions along the way. The restaurant derives its theme from the 16th century historical highway built by Sher Shah Suri and which ultimately extended from Kolkatta to Peshawar.

According to S Ramani, promoter of GTR, "After receiving an overwhelming response to the specialty restaurant in Kolkatta nearly a year and a half ago, we decided to offer cuisines from Bengal, Bihar, UP, Punjab, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In addition, GTR has created a 'food path', a small cozy lounge where guests can relax over tongue-tickling starters and their choice from a well-stocked bar."

The menu features golden fried prawns, fish finger, bannu kebab, tiretta bazaar, mushrooms, potato skins, golda chingri malai curry (prawn curry flavoured with coconut), lal murgi (spicy fowl curry), kasha mangsho, dachas dollar, palang chanar kofta, a variety of breads and flavoured rices and desserts like Chancre Malpao, baked sandesh, misted doi, black forest rasmalai, shahi tikra, angoori rabdi occupy pride of place. The Grand Trunk Road is a part of the 'Savourites Group', promoted by four hospitality professionals S Ramani, Subhankar Dhar, Aninda Palit and Chef Sushanta Sengupta.

Another initiative in Bangalore by the company was the setting up of a restaurant '6 Ballygunge Place' specialising in Bengali Food. This outlet will be replicated at New Delhi in 2007. In order to attract tea drinkers in the country, the Group is gearing up to set up tea bars called 'Gup Shup Chai Bars' at 200 location in India. There will be four varieties of tea in the cold and hot range. The bars will offer snacks to customers. It is estimated that each outlet will come up at a cost of Rs 17 lakh.

The concept is unique in the sense that easily accessible tea joints are a premium in this country. Gup Shup Chai Bars will fit the slot going by its affordability and accessibility, stated Ramani. Plans are also afoot to invest Rs 60 lakh into catering for companies to serve Executive Lunches for 5,000 people every day in Bangalore. For the project, land has been identified in the city and construction will take off early next year. It will cater to corporates and Pan India meals will be served.

A similar project took off successfully at Kolkatta where the company's clientele includes Cognizant, Eveready, Nestle, HSBC, UTI Bank, TCS, Siemens and Blue Star. "We hope to be successful in Bangalore because we are backed by over two and half decades of experience,"

he said. The eight-year-old Savourite Group is currently a Rs 8 crore enterprise which plans to float an IPO and the timing is being decided. Efforts are also on to open restaurants in US and Europe by 2010.
