Processing of spices commercially was a great challenge as almost all the housewives used to prepare them at home by adopting their own methods. Anticipating that the women would have to play a dominant role in the near future, the late Krishnaji Tukaram Kubal, eminent industrialist, who had an excellent vision, founded K T Kubal & Co Pvt Ltd in 1925.

The Kubal brand of pickle and spices with a domestic turnover of Rs 4 crore is well-known for the last 75 years for its quality and flavour. The company is also having an export division to organise sales in the Gulf (UAE, Muscat, Kuwait, Oman), USA, UK, Mauritius, etc., with an export turnover of Rs 15 lakhs.

"We process and manufacture our products by using genuine and high standard ingredients. We have two factories with well-equipped machinery to process and manufacture spices and pickles," said chairman and managing director Narayan Vijay Kubal.

Kubal has its spices factory at Lalbaug in Mumbai with modern plant and machinery.

The processing of chilli, turmeric, dhania and haldi powder, which are the basic ingredients for preparing masala, is done in an automatic plant. While selecting the basic whole spices, utmost care is taken to see that they are free from dust and are hygienic.

The research and development wing of Kubal has well qualified staff continuously engrossed in conducting research for the development of the various products. As a result, Kubal has developed a range of spices including special meat masala, biryani masala, chicken masala and pani puri masala. The basic raw materials meant for processing of pickles and spices are being analysed by the research wing so as to find out the suitability and genuineness before these materials are processed. It employs R&D methods to bring the quality nearer to the consumer's own preparations at home. Says Narayan Vijay Kubal: "Strict control is also being exercised on quality at the time of production so that at no stage the product is likely to be adulterated. After production an incubation period is allowed so that there would be no chance for the product getting deteriorated at any stage." With 10 retail shops of the company in the primary marketing zone and 25 distributors to take care of the growing retail markets, it caters to the needs of the growing consumers. It is also making steady improvements in packaging and presentation of its products to compete globally.
