Pall Corporation is a leading supplier of membrane filters, filter systems and fluid purification equipment. By constantly supplying innovative solutions, the company aims to address different problems haunting the water treatment industry. In an interview with FnB News Vikram Mahapatra, national sales manager, food and beverage division, Pall Life Sciences, speaks about innovations, future prospects and more.

Can you brief us about the company activities and its career growth in India?

Pall India F&B group is aligned within the Pall Life Sciences Group of Pall India Private Limited, which is part of Pall Corporation, the world leader in filtration and separation solutions. Pall LS (Life Sciences) is focussed on biopharmaceutical, lab, medical and food & beverage business. The other division is Pall Industrial which is focussed on fuels & chemicals, energy, aeropower and micro-electronics business. Pall F&B also caters to business needs of Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.

What are the latest water treatment technologies the company has to offer to the F&B segment and their applications?

Pall India F&B has state-of-the-art microfiltration (MF) & ultrafiltration (UF) cross-flow membrane technologies for water processing coupled with its traditional disposable cartridge range of products forms a one-stop solution to customer needs. We also provide the IMS (Integrated Membrane Systems) water processing technology, i.e. our membrane systems coupled with reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology.

What are the technologies being employed by you in providing solutions to the industry?

As a company, we are aware of the needs of reducing the beverage to water ratio targeted by beer, soft drinks, juices, dairy and other F&B industries, in addition to processing feed water such as RO feed water protection. Thus we offer tailor-made solutions for sand filter, activated carbon filter backwash water recovery (traditionally drained), CIP solutions recovery, wash water recovery, etc, as suited to the industry needs.

Are these technologies outsourced / transferred or are they manufactured domestically?

Pall India supports the entire system technology platform in India and only the membranes are imported from various Pall Corporation membrane manufacturing sites. Pall Advanced Separation Systems (PASS) Group supports the design, manufacturing, installation & commissioning of these systems out of its office in Hingewadi, Pune. It houses a team of 60+ engineers who support automated membrane systems all over Asia.

Can you brief us on the market scenario for this industry in India? Globally which is the most developed market for the water treatment industry?

Breweries, soft drinks, bottled water, fruit juice, dairy seem to be the most appropriate markets as they are actively looking at reducing the product to water ratio i.e. number of litres of water required to produce 1 litre of product. Where global market is concerned, going by rate of consumption, Germany could be the market for water treatment industry.

Which are the major challenges in this segment in India?

The major challenge is to select appropriate technology platform, integrate various technologies, provide one-stop solutions, system performance and warranties, after-sales services to ensure that the customer is assured of consistent quality and performance.

Potable water technologies should be made available to every household in the country so as to make water available at 10 paise a litre. Potable water supply could also be connected to the public taps in the rural areas and slum developments, which could be beneficial in tackling various water-related diseases.

Public works minister Chhagan Bhujbal had started the de-salination project for the water industry, the status of the same is however unknown.
