Janata Bazaar, which is the flagship retail outlets of the Karnataka State Cooperative Consumers Federation Ltd (KSCCF), is pumping in Rs 50 lakh towards modernisation of the outlets. In this regard a proposal was sent to the National Council for Cooperation Development, from where it will receive Rs 25 lakh. The state government will chip in the remaining amount.
The Janatha Bazaar outlets are now gearing up to take on retail chains like Subiksha, Big Bazaar and others, K Narayanswamy, managing director, KSCCF, told F & B News.
As the trend-setters in the consumer cooperative arena, Janata Bazaar came into being in 1969 across Karnataka. Of the 16 outlets in the state, seven are in Bangalore. The outlets have evolved a concept to procure from farmers on a no-profit no-loss basis.
According to Narayanswamy, products are procured from cooperative societies. The outlets offer around 1,110 products.
The cooperative outlets have now introduced self-service and different schemes and discounts. Plans are on to cash-in on the festival season items and offer coupons.
Efforts are also on to computerise the outlets and increase the workforce to handle the counters. In association with the Karnataka Milk Federation, the cooperative outlet has allocated Rs 8 lakh to install an air-conditioned milk parlour and sell KMF products.
As part of its revenue generation exercise, it has identified the hotel sector to supply grocery items to star hotels in Bangalore. In addition, it has also tapped the lucrative marriage market where it will provide the items to their doorstep.
An investment of Rs 100 crore is allocated to launch a Consumer Cooperative Mart where it is looking at helping farmers to get the right prices for their produce and avoid the interaction of middlemen. Various federations will participate in this project.
