Amore gelato on expansion spree
Saturday, 02 June, 2007, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Dhwani Pandya, Mumbai
Amore, the Mumbai-based gelato chain has recently opened its first outlet in Hyderabad, which was instantly followed by launch of two more outlets in Mumbai at Colaba and Vashi. Amore introduced just a year ago has received good response in Mumbai which encouraged it to eye other cities as well. Amore started by two passionate young entrepreneurs, Nayyer Hussain and Yasser Ali, serves totally authentic, traditional handcrafted Gelato, an Italian version of ice-creams using only natural additives and ingredients.

Currently Amore operates from two outlets, one at Bandra and the other at Andheri, in Mumbai. Amore offers a range of delectable gelato and sorbetto in as many as 200 flavours in rotation. It has recently started industrial supply of gelato to various catering and food services companies. The duo finds huge opportunity in this business apart from its original retail outlet business. Nayyer Hussain informed Food & Beverage News, "We have recently redeveloped and re-engineered the cost-effective way of making gelato. Amore brand uses premium ingredients and fresh fruits which often results in higher cost. The product supplied at this rate may reduce the margins of retailers, due to which we have worked really hard in developing a tier-II product which is outstanding in quality and made in an artisan way."

Several large restaurants and five-star hotels are already enquiring about Amore's industrial offering. It may not have the Amore brand name, but it will be prepared by Amore and will have the same principle of a high quality product, informed Yasser Ali. Amore makes gelato fresh everyday by the artisan and batch processing method. Looking at the rising industrial demand and expansion plans on card, Amore has already set up a central kitchen of 750 sq ft at Sion, which it thinks will be able to meet the substantial demand.

Amore is also exploring the franchisee option to have further expansion, "As Amore is all about quality and service standard, we will be very particular about choosing our franchise partners. One thing is very clear even if we will consider the franchisee arrangement, we will control the production of gelato," informed Ali.

Amore has recently extended its product portfolio by introducing products like frullato's, milkshakes, smoothies, frappe's and ice tea which are low in fats and targeted at health conscious. Amore has kept a constant goal to make sure that every customer leaves with an Italian experience and a smile on his/her face. This dedication has also won an international acclaim for Amore, a special prize from "Il Gelatiere," an international gelato contest for Italians.

The premium ice cream segment is one of the most rapidly growing segments worldwide and India is beginning to get in the act. In Italy there are 30,000 gelato outlets while in India there are about 40 to 50 gelato outlets. "Although it may not reach the same penetration level of Italy, there is a long way to go. Expansion potentials are very huge, not just through outlets but through other channels as well, as mentioned earlier," said Hussain.
