The Kerala Government has decided to offer a minimum support price of Rs 75 per kg to raw black pepper. It has allocated Rs 6 crore foe procuring the hot spice from small farmers, holding less than two hectares of land. The procurement will be carried out by the Kerala State Cooperative Marketing Federation (Marketfed). To help maintain a price level of above Rs 75 for the spice, it has earlier decided that the entire pepper, which will be procured from small farmers through Marketfed, will be exported. The government has decided to step in the pepper market after seeing its price crashing down to Rs 63 per kg recently.
