Robust regulatory mechanism needed for GM crop evaluation: Anwar
Friday, 08 November, 2013, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Abhitash Singh, Mumbai
Tariq Anwar, minister of state for agriculture and food processing industries, stated that in order to create awareness about the benefits of genetically-modified (GM) crops among the farmers and the people of India, it is imperative to have a robust regulatory mechanism in place to evaluate them.

He said, “Farmers who grow GM crops would have a higher yield, so it would be a boon for agricultural productivity. About 35 countries already use GM crops, and we recommend that the trials of these crops be carried out in India as well, under the guidance of scientific experts.”

“Productivity can also be increased by using biotechnology, but if the technology is the bone of contention, there should be a healthy debate,” Anwar said, in the wake of opposition to GM crop trials by environmentalists and a section of scientists.

He said that water, land and technological advancements should be used judiciously to maintain sustainable agriculture and achieve food security for the constantly-growing population of the country.

“Watershed management, rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge should be promoted n order to conserve the existing resource. Changes in climate could adversely affect the country's agricultural yield in the years to come. Steps must be taken to mitigate the impact,” Anwar added.

He said, “The export of Bt cotton fetched Rs 21,000 crore last year. This prompted farmers to cultivate it. The Supreme Court appointed a technical expert committee (TEC) to study GM crops, and the matter is in the apex court. We are awaiting a favourable response.

Anwar stated that agriculture minister Sharad Pawar was in favour of GM crop trials, and added that scientists from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) backed Pawar.
