Mawana introduces branded sugar in Mumbai market

Mawana Sugars is making forays in a niche segment - branded sugar - by entering the Mumbai market with its speciality sugar Mawana Select. The announcement was made in the island city on Monday.
Sunil Kakria, Managing Director, Mawana Sugars, informed reporters, “After establishing strong foothold in the northern region, we plan to expand our business pan-India. The foray into the Mumbai market is a move in that direction."
He added, “Mumbai is an important market for us and we are bullish on acquiring a sizeable share and increasing our sales contribution in the region by offering our consumers premium quality products."
He further stated, "Our products have seen significant growth over the last few years and we are confident that our premium grade of sugars will be well received and significantly boost our business nationally."
Interestingly, while the total consumption of sugar in the country is around 23 Mt, out of it, the share of branded sugar is merely one per cent. Surjya Meher, vice-president (retail), Mawana Sugars, adds, "Since the penetration of branded sugar is minuscule at present, we see a huge opportunity for the growth of our business as we are the leader in this category. We expect total sugar consumption to go up to 26 Mt over the next two-years. Thus, the share of branded sugar is also likely to increase."
The company unveiled six varieties of speciality sugar - Super White Sugar, Caster Sugar, Icing Sugar, Demerara Sugar, White Sugar Cubes and Demerara Sugar Cubes -under the Mawana brand priced in the range of Rs 88-170.
