India and the US have agreed to launch a joint initiative in agriculture for an "Evergreen Revolution" to promote food security around the world. Both countries also signed six other agreements including technical cooperation for the study of dynamical seasonal prediction o0f monsoon rainfall.
"We are launching a new partnership for an Evergreen Revolution that improves food security around the world," US President Barack Obama announced at the joint press conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Hyderabad House at the end of the delegation-level talks.
Prime Minister Singh said both the governments had reached an agreement for cooperation in weather and crop forecasting. Obama said like the earlier collaboration between the two countries in agriculture, which ushered in the Green Revolution in India, he expected the new initiative to bring in an Evergreen Revolution to enhance food security.
Both countries have agreed to cooperate on energy projects, including shale gas and clean energy. Addressing mediapersons, the two leaders said the two countries would set up a research and development (R&D) center for clean energy in India and would provide annual funding of $5 million each for 5 years, with matching investment from the private sector.
Meanwhile, India has raised the issue of high phytosanitary fees for the export of mangoes to the US, while the Americans sought market access to their barley and pet food products. After meeting USDA secretary Tom J Vilsack, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said, "Only general issues were discussed. For instance, export of mangoes is allowed to the US but the phytosanitary fee is kept at such a high level that it has become unviable for us."
