11,700 tonnes of grains damaged in FCI godowns, admits Pawar Friday, July 30, 2010 08:00 IST Over 11,700 tonnes of food grains worth Rs 6.86 crore were found damaged in the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns, food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The FCI had taken penal action against the officials responsible, he added.
“Reports have been received about damage to wheat and rice stocks in the FCI depots,” Pawar said. The damage was noticed by a team of officials which was deputed recently to inspect the food grains storage situation at the FCI depots across Hapur, Orai and Harduganj in UP. . “The team observed damage to wheat stocks at these depots and dereliction of duty by the FCI officials. Based on its report, the FCI has taken penal action against the officials concerned,” Pawar said, adding that corrective steps are being taken in this regard. According to the data submitted by Pawar, the maximum damage of 7,066 tonnes of food grains was reported from Punjab, followed by 1,846 tonnes from West Bengal and 1,457 tonnes from Gujarat. - Agencies
