The Maharashtra Government is planning to raise the production capacity of Aarey dairy by 7.5 lakh litres daily. It had sought help from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for turning around the dairy, according to Nitin Raut, state minister for dairy development. He made the statement in the Legislative Assembly while participating in a discussion on the dairy. Raut said talks were at an advanced stage with the NDDB, which would provided the necessary expertise for raising the capacity from the current level 2.5 lakh litres to 10 lakh litres a day. The national body would also help in formulating the milk procurement policy of the sate, he said.
The minister said as the machinery at the dairy was over 30 years old, it could not take additional raw milk for processing. An expert group had already been formed which would submit its preliminary report in 15 days for the revamp of the dairy. The number of milk booths across the city would also be increased, Raut said. Leader of the opposition and senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse alleged that the government had neglected the dairy for many years so that it would turn sick and its vast land could be exploited by real estate companies. “Aarey is a credible brand, it has the goodwill of the people. The retailers are keen to sell milk and other Aarey brands, but there is no adequate supply,” he said.
Aarey dairy and the surrounding colony is spread over 3,166 acres of prime verdant land in Goregaon. It also has smaller processing units at Kurla and Worli. The installed capacity of the dairy is about 12 lakh litres per day.
