Wednesday, 06 January, 2010, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
MV Chandrashekar, Bangalore
Aspasia Group has launched the first organic restaurant “Modak’ in Bangalore.

According to Satish, chairman of the Aspasia group, this restaurant’s focus is to make organic food affordable at affordable costs. The restaurant offers two types of vegetarian spread at Rs 50 and

Rs 80 respectively.

The Modak food sans chemicals and vegetables are sourced through the Unity Foundation which are promoters of organic farming.

Much of the products are sourced from Era Organics, vegetables from Hosur, rice from Sirsi, finished products like pickles, papads from Thirthalli, Dhal from north India, rock salt, salt from Adi Naturals in Bangalore.

Once the restaurant consolidates operations in Bangalore, it will extend to Tier II and III cities of Nagpur, Nanded, Aurangabad, Hubli, Salem, Coimbatore by 2010. Options of franchisee mode are also under consideration. However, the Group is confident of attracting customers from Bangalore and therefore efforts are on to open another 20 outlets here, he said.

Further, the Group is also looking at institutional sales for corporate houses, hospitals and colleges where they plan to cater in large volumes organic foods. Already talks are on with TCS and the company is confident of starting their venture by 2010 January.

Plans are afoot to supply organic products like sugar, tomato ketchup, tomato paste, onion powder and other value added products to international markets like USA, Europe, Japan. These operations will kick-off in the Q2 2011.

By the first quarter 2010, plans are afoot to start the new age small eating out outlets referred to as ‘Darshinis’. Under this venture, the flagship store will be called Tulsi and it is likely to be launched at Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh where one will get breakfast, lunch and dinner. Franchisees are open for entrepreneurs. Franchisees will need to set aside Rs. 20 lakh to set the outlets rolling.

Two years ago organic food was not available and affordable. Unity Foundation’s farm-to-fork concept and direct access to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has given a fillip to organic products. Right now Modak network covers 400 organic farms.
