India Tin Industries much-sought after for quality tin packaging in food sector

India Tin Industries (ITI) is on an aggressive drive to increase it customer base with the printed super wima welded cans. Current customers include Instant coffee, infant foods, dairy products, edible oils and processed foods.



The Bangalore-based company which commenced operations in 1947 has two associate units located at Hyderabad: Mayura Caps and Containers Pvt. Ltd. and International Cans Pvt Ltd. While the former is engaged in printed round and oval shaped cans for pharmaceuticals companies, the latter offers square, rectangular and other irregular shaped decorative cans for the confectionery and 18 litre capacity can for edible oils industry.



The main focus initially was on irregular shaped decorative cans for the confectionery and other related industries. In 80s they ventured into manufacture of super wima welded cans on high speed lines from Europe, A. Selvanambi, assistant manager, (Purchase), India Tin Industries told F&B News.



ITI's units at Chennai and Bangalore supplies printed super wima welded cans for packing of Instant coffee, infant foods, dairy products, edible oils and processed foods. These along with its associate units are engaged in the manufacture of cans of different types and sizes. All the plants have an annual capacity of 500 million cans, of which the Bangalore unit accounts for 150 million cans per year.



In the early days it manufactured printed tin containers for Mangharams, Parrys and Nutrine. Now they are the recognized manufacturers of metal containers in sizes 50 grams to 1 kg to pack instant coffee for the export market.



In addition, the company also caters to the packaging needs of the gherkin, mango pulp and sea food sector through its export quality tin cans, besides lug caps used for bottles.



The Bangalore unit has installed advanced automated imported machines from Europe and USA which are market leaders in the can manufacturing equipment. It is also fully equipped with pre press, printing, welding, curing and other equipments for can making.



Some of the leading customers are Continental Coffee Hyderabad, TATA Coffee, Hindustan Unilever, Narasus Coffee, Vahyan Coffee, Vijayawada, Vadilal Industries, Gujarat.



With the FMCG industry being a highly competitive market, only packaging majors with innovative techniques can compete. This is where we have strengths in technology and design, added Selvanambi.



The workforce are trained both in India and abroad. The company also undertakes customized orders.



Raw materials like tin plates required for the production are procured from Japan and Brazil. Tin is procured indigenously from the Tata Steel. The company as a full-fledged laboratory to carry quality tests of the final product.



The company operations from 1975 are manned by its chairman SB Kakani.
