Sugar output up 24.43% during Oct–Dec period

India’s sugar production recorded a robust growth of 24.43 per cent during the October–December period, reflecting improved cane availability and better recovery rates at mills, according to industry data.

During the first quarter of the ongoing 2025–26 sugar season, mills across key producing states crushed higher quantities of sugarcane compared to the corresponding period last year. The rise in output is being attributed to favourable weather conditions in major cane-growing regions, timely harvesting, and smoother mill operations.

Industry experts said states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka led the growth, contributing significantly to the higher production figures. Adequate monsoon rainfall in the previous season helped improve cane yield, while better sucrose recovery supported higher sugar output.

The increase in production has provided relief to the domestic market, which had earlier witnessed concerns over tight supply due to lower carryover stocks from the previous season. With higher production in the initial months, sugar availability has stabilised, helping to keep prices under check during the festive demand period.

Mills have also benefited from improved operational efficiencies and faster cane payments in some regions, encouraging farmers to supply cane on time. Industry stakeholders noted that early crushing and uninterrupted operations played a crucial role in boosting output during the quarter.

However, experts cautioned that the overall performance of the season will depend on production trends in the coming months, particularly in late-crushing states. Weather conditions, cane diversion for ethanol production, and export policies are expected to influence final output numbers.

The government continues to closely monitor sugar production and availability to ensure adequate domestic supply while balancing the interests of farmers and mills. Any policy decisions on exports or additional ethanol diversion are likely to be taken after assessing production trends for the full season.

With the strong start to the season, the sugar industry remains cautiously optimistic, expecting stable supplies and steady market conditions in the months ahead.
