Once considered a premium café indulgence, the croissant is fast emerging as one of India’s preferred everyday snacks. Ahead of National Croissant Day, ITC Sunfeast Baked Creations, in partnership with Swiggy, has unveiled consumption trends that highlight how the classic French pastry is being reimagined for Indian tastes and eating habits.
According to Swiggy data, over 1.5 million croissants were ordered across key Indian metros in the last year alone, with demand growing by nearly 20 per cent year-on-year. Today, nearly one in every three croissants ordered in major metros comes from ITC Sunfeast Baked Creations, underlining the brand’s growing dominance in the category.
To celebrate this evolving croissant culture, the brand has partnered with Swiggy to launch CroissantVerse, a curated discovery experience featuring 18 sweet and savoury croissant variants. The offering includes high-protein formats such as Chicken Béchamel Cropie and Paneer Bhurji Cropie, available exclusively on Swiggy’s EatRight section.
Indian consumers are not only embracing croissants more frequently, but also reshaping how they are consumed. No longer limited to the classic crescent shape or brunch occasions, croissants are now appearing as snack-meal hybrids. Innovations such as Pinwheel croissants inspired by thecha-style flavours and CroPies filled with Paneer Bhurji, Chicken Tikka and Mutton Keema are being chosen much like puffs, wraps or snack rolls—during chai breaks, after-work hunger pangs and even late-night cravings.
Swiggy insights reveal that 56 per cent of croissant orders in India are savoury, rising to over 60 per cent in cities like Mumbai and Pune. Chicken-filled, egg-and-cheese and mushroom variants are among the most popular choices, positioning croissants as direct competitors to burgers and wraps.
India’s leading croissant markets include Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune, with ITC Sunfeast Baked Creations emerging as the most preferred croissant brand in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Despite rapid innovation, classics continue to hold their ground, with Almond Croissants, particularly the Frangipane Almond variant, ranking among the most ordered.
Industry leaders note that croissants are transitioning from occasional treats to everyday food choices. With formats and flavours evolving rapidly, the flaky pastry is carving a permanent place in India’s modern snacking culture.
