Nilgiris, South India's leading chain of retail stores, has opened in Chennai its 100th store in South India. The outlet is on Chamiers Road next to the Boat Club. The chain, which has pioneered the franchise model in food and grocery retail format in India, has been a dominant player in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for many years now. It had earlier this year expanded its footprint to markets of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The superstore will be managed by Arun of Chandrikaa Home Needs.
Nilgiris, a household name in South India, has redefined the standards in retailing with highest throughputs per sq feet in the stores. The stores carry as high as 4 to 5 stock-keeping unit systems (skus) per sq ft which is way ahead of the average of 1.5 skus per sq ft that other modern trade chains offer.
The key differentiator for Nilgiris is its private label range which has been recognised for quality and freshness. The brand has a strong heritage in "fresh" products like dairy and bakery for which it has state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru. It sources the finest range of staples which are available to a consumer only in the Nilgiris stores. This is a key footfall driver to the stores. The franchisees offer unmatched services at the stores making the whole experience a delight for the consumers.
Nilgiris started its operations at Ooty and Coonoor in 1905. It has now grown from being a Dairy Farm specialising in butter to a supermarket chain of 100 stores spread across India's southern states. It is the only supermarket chain that lays special emphasis on its own products, sold under the brand name of 'Nilgiris 1905'.
