Cage-free eggs have pros, cons; Care taken while storing, transporting

There are pros and cons of cage-free eggs. Laboratory testing is done, and proper care is taken while storing and transporting the eggs. This was stated by Manjunath Patil, general manager, operations, Vista Processed Foods Pvt Ltd, during his presentation on understanding egg production and supply chain of eggs in India, a part of a session which was titled Cage-free poultry egg production in India, co-organised by the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) and Vista Processed Foods.
He spoke about the concept of cage-free eggs, their pros and cons, the current scenario of cage-free eggs and their challenges. He said, “India is the third-largest producer of eggs in the world, but has a lower per capita consumption of the same. Research on egg quality and safety is underway. Steps like animal health and welfare, flock monitoring practices and records and egg grading specification sheet.”
Rohit Sahanay of Veekay Farms spoke about the production and supply of eggs. He said, “Evaluation is being done of cage-free eggs in Indian conditions, and there is a need for the improvement for cage-free eggs.”
