FSSAI launches nationwide anti-adulteration drive ahead of Holi 2026

To ensure public health and food safety during the upcoming festive season, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced an intensive "Holi Anti Adulteration Drive 2026." The initiative aims to curb the sale of substandard and contaminated food products as demand surges across the country.

Holi traditionally sees a massive spike in the consumption of sweets, savories, milk products, and edible oils. Recognizing that this period often creates opportunities for unscrupulous vendors to sell adulterated goods, the FSSAI is taking proactive measures to protect consumers. The drive will specifically focus on high-demand items such as khoa, paneer, ghee, edible oils, and various festive snacks.

As part of the enforcement strategy, Food Safety Officers (FSOs) have been directed to conduct rigorous inspections and sampling across major markets. Special attention will be given to identified "hot spots"—areas known for high-volume production and historical safety concerns. To enhance efficiency, "Food Safety on Wheels" (FSW) mobile units will be deployed in several regions. These units are equipped to perform on-the-spot testing, providing immediate results and raising consumer awareness about food quality.

The FSSAI has integrated digital tracking into the campaign to ensure transparency and accountability. All inspection data and sampling results are required to be uploaded to the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) and FoSCoRIS platforms by March 31, 2026.

An FSSAI official emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure that every citizen can celebrate the festival without the risk of foodborne illnesses. By strengthening surveillance and maintaining a visible presence in the markets, the regulator aims to instill public confidence in the safety of the food supply chain. Consumers are also encouraged to remain vigilant and purchase festive treats only from licensed or registered vendors.
