PEZ enhances high-speed candy production with Leibinger CIJ printing solutions

PEZ, one of the world’s most iconic candy brands, has strengthened the reliability and efficiency of its production operations by deploying Leibinger continuous inkjet (CIJ) printing solutions at its U.S. manufacturing facility in Orange, Connecticut. The move supports uninterrupted production in a challenging, sugar-rich environment where precision coding is critical.
At the facility, PEZ produces over 1.5 million candy tablets per hour, with packaging lines operating at speeds of up to 350 rolls per minute. The plant runs a mix of traversing and linear lines, all exposed to fine sugar particles suspended in the air—conditions that can significantly impact conventional coding equipment through clogging, frequent cleaning, and inconsistent print quality.
Seeking to reduce downtime and simplify maintenance while maintaining consistent code quality, PEZ transitioned to Leibinger’s CIJ printing technology. According to Gerry Figueroa, Maintenance Lead at PEZ, the change has led to a dramatic reduction in downtime. He noted that the printers require minimal intervention, enabling a simple start-up process and reliable performance across shifts.
Leibinger printers are engineered for continuous readiness, featuring a fully automatic nozzle sealing system that keeps the nozzle airtight during production pauses. Continuous ink circulation throughout the system prevents clogging and ensures stable viscosity, allowing clean and reliable startups even after extended shutdowns. With programmable auto-start functionality, the printers are operational before production staff arrive.
Operational simplicity is further enhanced through Virtual Network Connectivity (VNC), enabling remote monitoring and adjustments without disrupting floor activities. PEZ also benefits from using a single ink formulation across all coding applications, streamlining consumables management. The automatic nozzle seal reduces solvent evaporation during idle periods, resulting in lower solvent consumption.
Tony Cangiano, maintenance manager at PEZ, said the printers now operate seamlessly in the background, allowing teams to focus on core production activities.
By integrating Leibingers’s CIJ technology, PEZ continues to uphold its commitment to consistency, efficiency, and dependable production ensuring its signature candies meet demand with the same reliability consumers have trusted for generations.
