ofi unveils ‘Spice Maps’ — first comprehensive sustainability strategy for spices
Saturday, 10 January, 2026, 15 : 00 PM [IST]
New York, USA
ofi (olam food ingredients), a global leader in naturally good food and beverage ingredients, has launched its first spices sustainability strategy, Spice Maps, marking a major push to enhance resilience and sustainability across spice supply chains. The announcement was made alongside the company’s updated Nut Trails impact report, both forming part of ofi’s overarching Choices for Change sustainability framework aligned with its 2030 goals and a newly validated Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pathway.

Recognising that each spice faces unique agronomic, environmental and social challenges, Spice Maps sets tailored 2030 targets for six priority crops — pepper, chile, turmeric, onion, cassia and coconut — across key growing regions including the US, Mexico, India, Egypt, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia. The strategy emphasises water stewardship, climate resilience and regenerative farming practices that reflect local realities for farmers and farming communities.

Key priorities under the new framework include piloting regenerative technologies in drought-prone onion growing regions of the US and Egypt, supporting black pepper farmers in Vietnam and Cambodia with strengthening infrastructure and emissions reductions, and helping chile growers in India adopt modern agronomic practices to reduce chemical inputs and improve soil health.

Burcu Turkay, Global Head of Sustainability for Nuts and Spices at ofi, said the strategy builds on over two decades of sustainability experience and deep farming relationships. She emphasised the importance of setting goals that matter to communities, landscapes and customers, delivering value from clean-label spice blends to protein-rich nut ingredients.

The company is also leveraging technology to drive sustainability impact from farm to factory. AI-powered soil sensors and smart spraying systems optimise irrigation and reduce chemical use, while solar power projects and digital traceability tools help decrease emissions and improve transparency. In Côte d’Ivoire, a geo-location app has supported malnutrition screening for 22,000 children, and in Cambodia, 3,000 pepper farmers now use a direct sourcing app enhancing traceability and fair pricing.

ofi’s Spice Maps strategy underscores its commitment to building resilient, sustainable spice supply chains that benefit farmers, communities and customers, and deliver measurable progress toward long-term climate and social goals.
